How We Try to Help Save Your Teeth

In most situations, an extraction is the least desirable course of action. Dr. Ravi Shah believes in giving everyone their best chance of saving their natural teeth. There are several things that should be tried before the permanent solution of extraction becomes necessary. We may recommend that you have a root canal for your broken or infected tooth. A root canal is considered a restorative treatment option. During a root canal, the damaged nerve is removed, the roots are enhanced and the tooth is rebuilt by installing a filling or fitting you for a crown.

If you have had previous extractions, Dr. Shah may want to arrange a consultation for dentures or dental implants to replace those missing teeth. This is also a viable option if extraction cannot be avoided.

Reasons You Might Need a Tooth Extraction

What to Avoid after a Tooth Extraction

While you are healing from your tooth extraction, there are some simple things that you should avoid:

  • Do not use a straw with your drink. If you suck through a straw, you may dislodge the blood clot that is helping your mouth heal.
  • No hot liquids. Hot liquids can worsen the swelling in your mouth.
  • Avoid alcohol. You may be taking some pain medication during the first 24 hours following your extraction.
  • No smoking. If you smoke, you risk breaking down the blood clot leaving you with a painful condition called dry socket.
